Top SchoolChristian Franck is the Bjorn Borgen Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where he directs translational research programs focused on detecting and preventing traumatic brain injury for both civilian and military populations. Trained in aerospace and aeronautics (BS UVA; MS/PhD Caltech) and with postdoctoral experience in neural trauma at Harvard, he combines solid mechanics, multiphoton 3D imaging, and digital volume correlation to reveal how neurons and soft tissues deform during impact. He leads the ONR-funded PANTHER consortium and the Center for Traumatic Brain Injury, coordinating over 25 PIs to accelerate basic-science discoveries into protection solutions. His lab’s unique full-field 3D microscopy platforms enable quantitative insights into nonlinear soft-matter behavior that are difficult to capture with traditional techniques.
