Top SchoolDavid Houweling is a senior engineering manager and former principal software engineer with 11 years of experience building scalable server- and client-side applications, now leading engineering at Canva from Sydney. He is a full-stack practitioner whose bread-and-butter technologies include Node.js, TypeScript, React and modern web tooling, but who deliberately chooses the right tool for the job and happily jumps into front-end frameworks, APIs, or DevOps work. A pragmatic mentor and communicator, he pairs hands-on coding and architecture with clear documentation, user stories, and stakeholder-facing proposals to help teams ship delightful user experiences. David frames engineering like music—attention to individual parts and how they play together—which reflects his side interest in sound mixing and informs his emphasis on harmonious systems and developer experience. He enjoys influencing technical direction and ownership of architectural decisions to drive sustainable growth and stronger developer teams.
