Top SchoolEmma Karoune is a Principal Investigator and community-focused research leader who builds capacity in biomedical data science, AI, and open scholarship across academic and policy settings. She leads the MRC-funded Advancing Biomedical Data Science Careers project at The Alan Turing Institute while co-founding RCM Cooperative to support equitable, resilient collaborative research. With a background as an archaeobotanist (PhD, UCL) and experience in education, she uniquely blends domain research, pedagogy and practical stewardship of data and people. Emma has led high-profile initiatives such as the FAIR Phytolith Project and contributed technical documentation and community workflows to the widely used The Turing Way open-source guide. She is a Software Sustainability Institute and ELIXIR-UK fellow who mentors through Open Life Science and helps professionalise data roles in research. Her work often surfaces less-visible infrastructure: shaping contributor processes, reproducible practices and skills frameworks that make data science teams more effective.
