Senior🎓
Top SchoolErik Hetzner is a senior software engineer with 18 years of experience building and modernizing large, content-rich web platforms for research and publishing. He combines hands-on development across Java/Spring, Ruby on Rails, Python/Django, Scala and cloud services with technical leadership—guiding teams, conducting code reviews, and partnering with non-technical stakeholders to turn domain needs into pragmatic solutions. At PLOS he led performance, search, and storage overhauls—cutting search latency 10x, halving backend transaction times via HTTP caching, and migrating multi-terabyte corpora to Google Cloud Storage. He has deep expertise in search technologies (Lucene/Solr) and web archiving systems, having led the California Digital Library’s Web Archiving Service and contributed to OpenWayback stewardship. Comfortable operating at the intersection of product, SRE, and engineering, he favors simplifying complex systems to improve reliability and performance. With a BA in History from UC Berkeley, he brings a researcher’s attention to detail and a long track record of shipping durable, maintainable systems.
