Top SchoolErnest Mishkin is a Principal Engineer with over 20 years of experience designing and operating high-volume, fault-tolerant systems from startup to enterprise scale. He was a founding engineer and principal architect at Returnly, building backend and data infrastructure that supported nearly $3B in instant credit and hundreds of millions of orders, and later led platform and data teams through acquisition at Affirm. Ernest blends hands-on systems engineering—JVM tuning, RDBMS performance, observability, and high-throughput data ingestion—with strong technical leadership, mentoring teams while codifying standards for security, governance, and reliability. He has a track record of architecting from scratch and surgically refactoring legacy systems to reduce downtime and legal risk while enabling new product opportunities. Comfortable as a “jack of all trades,” he often serves as the bridge between pods and specialized teams (SRE, Analytics, Data Science) to deliver pragmatic, beautiful solutions. Based in San Rafael, he pairs deep academic training in math and CS with a taste for solving technical mysteries and creating reusable frameworks that scale.
