👤
SeniorGareth Edwards is a senior R&D leader and entrepreneur with over 16 years of experience commercialising computer vision technologies, currently serving as Senior Director of R&D at Epic Games after his company Cubic Motion was acquired in 2020. He co-invented the Active Appearance Model alongside Professors Chris Taylor and Tim Cootes—a widely cited method in video and medical image analysis that earned Olympus Science for Life and IEEE Test of Time recognition—and has been individually honored with the Sullivan Prize. Gareth has a track record of founding and scaling specialist startups (Image Metrics, Cubic Motion), advising accelerators and startups, and translating deep research into production-ready workflows that automate visual content pipelines. Based in Manchester, he blends academic rigour with commercial savvy, often focusing on practical automation rather than flashy proofs of concept. Despite a self-deprecating Github bio, his career demonstrates consistent impact at the intersection of research, productisation, and studio-grade visual effects.
