George Thomas
Software Engineer at CTDS - University of Chicago
Chicago, Illinois, United States
Summary
George Thomas is a senior software engineer based in Seattle with over two decades of hands-on experience modernizing legacy scientific and research systems into cloud-native platforms. He specializes in back-end Python development, timeseries data collection and analysis, database programming and administration (Oracle/MySQL), and migrating monolithic Solaris/Oracle stacks to AWS serverless architectures. At the National Alzheimer's Coordinating Center he combined careful data stewardship with cloud migration and continuous performance and UX improvements, and today continues that focus at the Center for Translational Data Science. His background in geophysics and electronics gives him uncommon depth in instrumentation, cabling, and circuit-level troubleshooting, which he still applies as a hobby repairing vintage music electronics. Known for pragmatic problem-solving, clear documentation and public speaking, he brings a scientist’s rigor to production engineering and data-driven systems.
