Top SchoolGurcan Gercek is a Data Engineer in Toronto with 13 years of software experience and eight years focused on Java-based systems, currently building data platforms at Shopify. He blends academic rigor—a PhD-level background in access control for big data—with hands-on engineering across Reactive Kafka microservices, Spark, and key-value datastores like Accumulo. His work spans SQL and NoSQL ecosystems (Postgres, Neo4j, MongoDB) and pragmatic automation in Bash and Python, including CI/CD and deployment orchestration improvements that cut Docker build times and strengthened CVE detection. He has led R&D and teaching on dynamic access control, access-control analytics and text analytics, translating research prototypes into production-capable systems. Comfortable on-call and in cross-functional teams, he’s delivered behavior-change platforms and on-device decision engines while also contributing tools and integrations for e-commerce and security monitoring. A detail that often surprises colleagues: he combines deep systems security research with practical performance wins, from SVG UI optimizations to cluster-scale Spark labs.
