Top SchoolHayley Swimelar is a Staff Backend Engineer at GitLab with 11 years of experience building large-scale storage and metadata systems for container registries. She led the design and execution of a cross-cutting metadata migration that enabled online garbage collection and storage tracking for 100% of GitLab.com projects, and authored optimizations that reduced import windows from hours to minutes for typical repos. Her work bridged self-managed and cloud deployments, producing the three-phase migration blueprint used across Omnibus, Charts, and BYOD database rollouts. Based in Portland, she brings a background in library science and user-focused thinking to complex backend problems, pairing rigorous data migrations with practical operational runbooks. Colleagues rely on her ability to turn high-risk, large-data operations into repeatable, low-downtime procedures that scale from single-digit TiB to 100+ TiB installations.
