Summary
👤
SeniorHongbo Zhang is an Assistant Professor of Computer Science with 11 years of experience bridging academic research and applied engineering in 3D imaging, computer vision, robotics, and optical sensing. He holds a Ph.D. in Industrial and Systems Engineering from Virginia Tech and has a strong track record of developing machine learning methods for human posture estimation, novel 3D optical imaging techniques (including TIE and FPM), and practical simulation and optimization tools. His background spans transportation modeling, manufacturing design, and logistics optimization, with early industry work building transit and image-management systems in C++ and SQL. Known for simplifying complex technology for end users, he combines mathematical programming and quantitative simulation with hands-on prototyping using SolidWorks, Fluent, and open-source contributions. Hongbo’s research emphasizes real-world impact—reducing fall risk in the elderly and advancing autonomous sensing—and he continues to translate lab innovations into deployable systems. He is based in Blacksburg, Virginia, and reachable at hbzhang@vt.edu.
