Top SchoolKieu Tran is a first-generation Vietnamese American artist based in Oakland who transitioned from a six-year software engineering career to become a full-time ceramic sculptor in 2021. She creates elegant, biomorphic ceramic works that sit between abstraction and the figurative, aiming to evoke emotion and a sense of shared humanity without words. Trained in art history at UCLA with study stints in Italy and Germany, she combines deep visual literacy with a pragmatic, engineering-honed approach to problem solving and craft. Her prior engineering roles at Broadly and Prezi gave her experience building reliable full-stack systems, a discipline she now applies to studio practice, production, and audience building. Despite no formal studio training, her sculptures have been featured in Interior Design, Surface, and Sight Unseen and have attracted a growing collector base. An intriguing throughline in her career is the ease with which she reinvented herself—moving from tech to art while bringing rigorous technical habits to creative studio systems.
