Mengfan Xu is a tenure-track assistant professor in Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at UMass Amherst with eight years of experience bridging theoretical machine learning and large-scale industrial applications. She earned her PhD in Industrial Engineering and Management Sciences from Northwestern and specializes in bandit problems (MAB, MO-MAB) and their extensions to federated learning and deep reinforcement learning, combining provable theory with numerical validation. Prior industry work includes impactful algorithm and pipeline engineering at DiDi—where she designed causal forest–based pricing and productionized recommender models—and an LLM-focused internship at LinkedIn. A strong mathematician and statistician by training, she has published and presented research on causal forests and treatment-effect estimation and brings a rare mix of rigorous analysis and production-scale engineering to her work.
