Summary
👤
SeniorScott Smith is an accomplished bioinformatics software architect and founder with 18 years building large-scale genomic analysis, LIMS, and knowledge-management systems for research and clinical use. Based in San Francisco, he has led engineering teams from startup stealth diagnostics to institutional genome centers, scaling pipelines that powered landmark cancer genome sequencing and reproducible analysis at throughput of thousands of genomes per year. As an owner/consultant he launches and extends engineering, databases, and infrastructure for venture-backed biotech companies, often serving as the sole engineering function or a strategic specialist. He combines deep domain experience in NGS integration, data provenance, and automated testing with a proven talent-spotting and team-building record that seeded high-performing groups and open-source ecosystems. Notably, he drove the Genome Modeling System and programs that produced over 1,500 shareable analysis components — a scale that outpaced contemporaries while bridging research and clinical decision support.
