Top SchoolShawn Laffan is a seasoned academic leader with 15 years in senior earth and sustainability science roles and over two decades at UNSW and ANU, now directing the Earth and Sustainability Science Research Centre. He combines deep expertise in geography (PhD, ANU) with practical higher education pedagogy (GradCert in University Learning and Teaching) to steer interdisciplinary research and teaching programs. As a professor and former associate professor, he has a long track record of building research capacity and translating complex environmental science into policy-relevant outputs. Based in Sydney, he is known for bridging rigorous spatial science with applied sustainability challenges, often working at the interface of modelling, data and decision-making. A subtle strength is his sustained institutional impact—progressing from lecturer to centre director—which speaks to both scholarly stature and organisational leadership.
