Senior🎓
Top SchoolShiling Liang is an ELBE Postdoctoral Fellow with nine years of research experience in non-equilibrium and stochastic thermodynamics, focused on how temperature gradients and symmetry breaking shape biochemical systems and might have influenced the origin of life. Trained at EPFL (PhD, MS) and with a background in theoretical and mathematical physics from Manchester and Beijing Normal University, she combines rigorous theory with interdisciplinary collaborations at institutes including Max Planck and OIST. Her recent work probes the thermodynamic costs and bounds of symmetry breaking in living systems, bridging fundamental statistical physics with questions in biophysics. Known for pursuing subtle, non-obvious constraints (e.g., thermodynamic limits on irreversible pattern formation), she brings a deep quantitative perspective to problems at the interface of physics and biology.
