Top SchoolSoumyanil Banerjee is a medical imaging researcher and postdoctoral fellow in neurosurgery at the University of Michigan with a decade of experience applying deep learning, computer vision, and generative AI to clinical imaging problems. His PhD work at Wayne State spanned brain connectomics, spatiotemporal forecasting with transformers and GNNs, and advanced volumetric segmentation using dual self-distillation, reflecting a strong blend of theory and practical model engineering. He has translated research into industry impact during a Genentech internship where he developed concept-based explanations for predicting geographic atrophy progression from fundus autofluorescence, going beyond standard saliency methods. Earlier roles include optimizing SPECT system calibration and ultrasound lesion analysis, giving him hands-on expertise in image formation and physics-informed ML. Based in Detroit, he combines rigorous academic training with translational focus on non-invasive clinical tools, notably developing sequence-agnostic models for localizing seizure onset in pediatric epilepsy. Colleagues would note his uncommon skillset of pairing interpretable concept-based explanations with state-of-the-art architectures to push medical AI toward clinical relevance.
