Top SchoolSteve Herrin is a Staff Research Engineer in AI and software based in San Jose with 11 years of experience building production ML systems, data platforms, and scientific software. He has led and scaled engineering teams from first hire to production at startups and large orgs, architecting cloud-native data catalogs, high-throughput GWAS pipelines, and identity/permissions systems for biological modeling platforms. His work spans end-to-end ML — from benchmarking and productionizing transformers and diffusion models to prototyping LLM/RAG applications for scientific data discovery. Notable strengths include turning complex lab and sequencing workflows into robust ETL, APIs, and simulation tools, and shipping auditable data infrastructures used by researchers and collaborators like NVIDIA. He holds a PhD in Physics and combines rigorous scientific modeling with pragmatic engineering to move research-grade models into reliable production services.
