Top SchoolThien Tran is a materials-focused civil engineer and postdoctoral researcher at UT Austin with a decade of experience bridging laboratory characterization and sustainable construction practice. He specializes in cement chemistry and advanced microstructural techniques (TGA, XRD, SEM-BSE-EDS, Raman, FTIR, ICP-MS) to optimize concrete made with recycled aggregates and high volumes of supplementary cementitious materials. His work spans soil stabilization using industrial wastes and novel approaches to CO2 capture within cementitious systems, blending environmental goals with practical engineering. Trained across Vietnam, South Korea, Japan, and the U.S., he brings international experimental rigor from roles at Virginia Tech, Chonnam National University, and Kansai University to interdisciplinary sustainability challenges. An early-career researcher who pairs hands-on lab mastery with field-relevant testing, he often focuses on less-visible lifecycle impacts such as pore solution chemistry and hydration heat management to drive durable, low-carbon materials.
