Top SchoolTom August is a computational ecologist with 13 years of experience applying high-performance computing, drones, AI, and citizen science to biodiversity monitoring. Based at the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology, he builds large-scale workflows and hardware-software systems—such as insect imaging rigs and computer vision pipelines—to turn sensor data into actionable biodiversity insights. He chairs the InsectAI COST Action, coordinating a 250+ member European network to accelerate imaging and AI methods for insect monitoring. Trained as an ecologist (PhD) with extensive field and lab experience studying bats and tundra carbon fluxes, he blends hands-on natural history with engineering and data science. Tom emphasizes knowledge exchange and stakeholder-facing tools that make national-scale biodiversity data accessible and usable. An often-overlooked strength is his knack for translating complex technological approaches into practical solutions that empower volunteer monitoring programs.
