Top SchoolVarun Kumar is a machine learning-focused computational neuroscientist and visiting research scholar at Purdue University with eight years of experience applying ML to neural and biomedical problems. He develops neural data analysis tools for Neuropixels recordings and builds models to probe theta oscillations and memory encoding in mouse visual cortex, having also decoded speech-aligned phonemes from neural signals. A Purdue MS in ECE with top academic pedigree from NITK, he has practical experience across EEG-based epilepsy detection, device parameter extraction, and zero-shot plant species detection for environmental impact. Varun combines rigorous engineering—shipping research software packages—with translational ambition in genomics, medical imaging, and cancer diagnosis to make healthcare more affordable and reliable. Notably, he bridges wet-lab neuroscience findings and deep learning by replicating biological oscillatory phenomena inside predictive models, highlighting a rare blend of experimental insight and ML expertise.
